President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s young people to reject drug use and other harmful habits that could undermine their prospects and the nation’s progress. Speaking during his Eid al-Adha address at Independence Square on Wednesday, May 27, the President urged the youth to adopt discipline, diligence, accountability and sound values that will allow them to play a meaningful role in building the country.
President Mahama took the opportunity to stress the value of ethical leadership and harmony, citing Ghana’s National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, whose example he said remains an inspiration to all citizens.
In the President’s words, the National Chief Imam’s enduring dedication to modesty, tolerance, peacemaking and kindness has won him respect across faiths and political lines and ought to guide the younger generation.
“We are blessed to have the enduring example of our revered National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, whose life continues to inspire all Ghanaians through his humility, his compassion, his simplicity, his tolerance and his peacebuilding.
“Let us emulate these noble virtues in our daily lives.”The President further charged the youth to stay focused and avoid conduct that could sabotage their dreams and endanger the country’s social peace. “I especially encourage our young people to remain disciplined, law-abiding, respectful and responsible citizens. I urge you to also avoid drug addiction. Our nation needs young people who are focused on education, skills, hard work, entrepreneurship and service to humanity.”
