Petroleum tanker drivers have started a sit-down strike today to protest the bad nature of the 7.2km road from Valco Roundabout to Kpone Junction in Tema.
The drivers said the stretch has become a death trap, especially for them because they carry highly flammable fuel products through it every day.
The National Chairman of the Tanker Drivers Union, George Nyaunu, told journalists that the action has become necessary as the road keeps getting worse and more dangerous to use.
He said although a contractor has moved to site to fix the road, work is moving at a snail’s pace.
The drivers argue that apart from slowing their work, the damaged road is raising the danger involved in moving fuel in the Tema enclave.
They are particularly worried because the area hosts several depots holding millions of litres of petrol and LPG.
Stakeholders warn that with so much fuel stored in the area, the entire Tema township and nearby communities are sitting on a time bomb if government fails to fix the road quickly.
