The three pre-tertiary teacher unions have suspended their nationwide strike after successful talks with the Council of State and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The unions, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers? actually Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG), agreed to suspend the action to make way for further negotiations on their demands.
GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah announced the decision after a meeting with the FWSC, saying it followed engagements with the Ministry of Employment and the Council of State.
“We want to announce that we have suspended the strike today. We want to call all our members to return to the classrooms,” he said.
The teachers had withdrawn their services over delays in promotions, unpaid promotion arrears, conditions of service and deprived-area allowances.
The Council of State on October 9 invited the union leaders to a meeting to address the concerns and find a way forward.
