The planned industrial action by teacher unions over the failure to upgrade newly promoted teachers onto their correct salary levels has been put on hold.
This follows a crunch meeting with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Monday, August 31, after the unions had warned of a strike if the matter was not addressed by close of day.
The unions had expressed anger that teachers who had earned promotions were still not placed on their new salary scales and were therefore not enjoying the accompanying pay rise.
The disagreement came after the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department demanded extra lists and documents before effecting the promotions.
According to the unions, that demand contradicted an earlier promise by the Ghana Education Service (GES) that an automatic promotion system would take effect by August.
But after Monday’s talks with the education minister, the unions have shelved the intended strike to allow for further negotiations with government.
The engagement is expected to open the door for continued dialogue between the Ministry and the unions to settle the salary placement impasse.
