Football’s deep connection to African identity, culture and community took center stage at the National Museum of African Art as part of the “Stars, Stripes, and Stadiums: America’s 250th & FIFA 2026” celebration in the United States (U.S.).

Held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, the event brought together football enthusiasts, cultural leaders, journalists and members of the African diaspora for an evening dedicated to celebrating the global influence of the beautiful game called football by Africans and Soccer by the U.S.

Organized in collaboration with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the program featured a moderated panel discussion, cultural activities, and a Sounds of Africa concert featuring Sugarlane and other performers.

Football has long been more than a sport across Africa. The game reflects stories of identity, resilience, migration and pride. The panel explored how African football continues to shape global conversations around culture and representation.

The discussion featured a distinguished group of voices with unique perspectives on the sport. Kwabena Ofori, an acclaimed FIFA photojournalist, shared insights from his work documenting some of football’s biggest moments and capturing the passion surrounding the game.

The panel was moderated by Vincent Makori, media executive, Managing Editor at Voice of America and host of VOA’s flagship program, Straight Talk Africa. His experience in international journalism helped guide conversations on football, media and Africa’s global influence.

Also featured was Richmond Danso (PhD), a Washington, DC-based writer covering African football, identity and the diaspora. Dr. Danso has profiled all ten African nations that participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and brought an academic and cultural perspective to the discussion as a Professor of Political Science at Howard University.

Douglas Boateng, an elite one-on-one soccer coach who trains NCAA Division I, Division III and NAIA players was also included on the panel. Through Mr. Boateng’s work has seen him volunteer coaching with the Stafford Community Soccer Fitness Academy, he mentors West African veterans and young players across Stafford, Fredericksburg and Prince William County – all respectively in Virginia,, United States.

He also serves as Director of Enterprise Architecture at the American Nurses Association in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he oversees the organization’s IT and technology landscape.

The event was also attended by the National Museum of African Art Director John Lapiana, who joined guests in celebrating the museum’s role in highlighting the intersection of African culture, creativity and global conversations around football.

Through photography, storytelling, music and dialogue, the celebration served as a reminder that football is not only played on the pitch but also lives in the culture, memories and dreams of millions around the world. The evening highlighted the powerful role football plays in connecting generations and communities across continents.

“As the world prepares for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted by Brazil and the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics happening in the U.S., events like “Stars, Stripes and Stadiums…” underscore how African stories, creativity and sporting excellence remain an essential part of the global football conversation,” said Mr. Oral Ofori of TheAfricanDream Consultancy which helped produce the July 18 event.
