At least three people have been confirmed dead and nine others injured following a fresh violent attack on Odomi, a community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.
The attack occurred on Thursday evening when unidentified gunmen reportedly invaded the community, sparking fear and panic among residents already affected by ongoing tensions and conflict in the area.
The injured victims sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to St. Joseph Catholic Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Hospital sources confirmed that one of the victims died while receiving treatment, while two others were brought to the facility already deceased after reportedly being attacked on their farms.
The identities of the attackers remain unknown, and the circumstances surrounding the latest violence have yet to be fully established.
In response to the incident, security agencies, with support from military personnel, have intensified patrols across the municipality in an effort to restore calm, reassure residents and prevent further attacks.
The latest violence comes just a week after the Oti Regional House of Chiefs announced the formation of a seven-member committee tasked with helping to resolve the protracted conflict in the municipality.
The committee, which is yet to be formally inaugurated, is expected to engage traditional leaders, community stakeholders and other relevant parties to identify the root causes of the conflict and recommend sustainable solutions.
The renewed attack has heightened concerns about security in the area and underscores the urgent need for effective interventions to prevent further loss of life and restore lasting peace in the municipality.
