President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the challenge of finding trustworthy employees as a significant obstacle for business owners, even more pressing than financial constraints.
Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum on April 19, President Mahama shared a personal experience to illustrate the issue. He recounted buying a bus for a relative to run a transport business, hoping it would provide financial stability for his family. However, the driver, also a relative, prioritized his own interests, modifying the vehicle in ways that led to repeated breakdowns.
The President narrated how the driver would overload the bus, causing the axle to break down repeatedly. Despite the initial intention to support his family, he was forced to sell the bus due to the driver’s mismanagement. Reflecting on the broader implications, President Mahama noted that many entrepreneurs struggle with similar challenges, as employees often view their employers’ businesses as stepping stones for their own ventures.
He pointed out that some Ghanaian business owners have resorted to hiring foreign managers due to difficulties in finding reliable local personnel. He emphasized the need for a shift in mindset, urging Ghanaian professionals to embrace a culture of dedication and integrity in business management. “Getting trusted people to work with is a serious issue,” President Mahama said. “We must find a core of management that is dedicated to working to build the business, not exploiting it for personal gain.”
The President’s remarks highlight the importance of trust and reliability in business operations. As Ghana’s business landscape continues to evolve, building a strong core of trustworthy individuals committed to growing businesses rather than exploiting them for personal gain will be crucial for sustainable growth and development.
