The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana has intensified calls for urgent reforms to the country’s teacher posting system, cautioning that Colleges of Education may face closure if the government fails to absorb the growing number of trained teachers.
At a press conference held at the association’s national secretariat on Wednesday, April 22, TTAG President Nanija Devine described the government’s recent recruitment of 7,000 teachers as insufficient to address the scale of the challenge.
According to him, the recruitment figures fall short of expectations and should be expanded to accommodate all qualified teachers awaiting placement. He further reiterated the association’s demand for the restoration of automatic postings for trained teachers.
Mr Devine underscored the severity of the situation, noting that more than 45,000 trained teachers remain unposted, while over 65,000 students are currently enrolled across Colleges of Education. He questioned the viability of the training system under such conditions, given the uncertainty facing both graduates and those still in training.
He warned that the issue requires urgent and decisive intervention, arguing that if the state is unable to recruit the backlog of trained teachers, authorities may need to reconsider the continued operation of Colleges of Education.
