A tragic road accident involving a school bus has claimed the lives of two pupils of Alice Elites Academy, a preparatory school located at Assin Edubiase in the Assin South District of the Central Region.

The deceased, a boy and a girl, were among more than 40 schoolchildren travelling in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus when the accident occurred on the Assin Homaho road on the evening of Monday, June 1.

Confirming the incident, the Central North Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), DSP Wonder Lumor, disclosed that emergency services swiftly responded to the scene and transported the injured pupils to nearby health facilities for treatment.

According to DSP Lumor, 22 of the victims were taken to St. Francis Xavier Hospital, while 18 others were admitted to the Assin Edubiase Health Centre.

One of the affected parents, Douglas Odoom, spoke to Adom News about the devastating impact of the accident on families and the wider community.

In an update on the condition of the injured pupils, DSP Lumor indicated that all 40 children who sustained injuries received medical attention and have since been discharged to their families.

Authorities have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the crash.

The tragedy has left the Assin Edubiase community in mourning, with grieving families, residents and school authorities struggling to come to terms with the loss of the two young pupils.

The incident has also renewed concerns about road safety and the transportation of schoolchildren, as residents await the outcome of investigations into the fatal crash.
