Two personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have sustained injuries following a secondary explosion during efforts to contain a tanker fire at Potsin Junction in the Central Region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 17, 2026, along the Kasoa–Winneba road, where emergency teams had been battling a volatile blaze involving a fuel tanker.
The situation escalated after the tanker, which firefighters initially appeared to have brought under control, suddenly reignited and triggered a powerful second explosion. Eyewitnesses described the moment as sudden and devastating.
“There was a spark from the tanker… within a second, all of us nearly died,” one survivor recounted.

The two injured officers were caught in the direct path of the blast while actively working to suppress the flames. Reports indicate that the force of the explosion threw one of the officers off a fire tender. Both have since been transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. No fatalities have been officially confirmed.
The secondary explosion has heightened safety concerns in the area, which remains cordoned off as emergency responders work to prevent further casualties.
Speaking from the scene, Adom News Central Regional Correspondent, Kofi Adjei, reported that the tanker had reignited once again, underscoring the difficulty firefighters are facing in bringing the situation under control.
The recurring flare-ups continue to pose a significant risk of further explosions, with thick smoke and intense heat affecting nearby structures and residents. Several community members have reportedly been left shaken in the aftermath, with some initially unaccounted for during the chaos.

The GNFS has deployed additional personnel and equipment from neighbouring stations to support containment efforts and ensure the tanker is fully cooled to prevent another eruption.
Authorities are urging motorists to avoid the Kasoa–Winneba stretch or proceed with extreme caution, as emergency teams maintain a strong presence at the scene. The full extent of damage to property and the number of affected residents is yet to be determined.
