A military encampment belonging to Ghanaian forces attached to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon was struck by rocket fire, escalating concerns over the safety of international troops amid ongoing hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants.
According to an official release from the Ghana Armed Forces on Friday, the facility came under attack during a brief window just before 6:00 p.m. local time. The assault left two soldiers with severe wounds, and a third member of the unit is experiencing severe emotional distress. The structure housing the officers’ dining facility was entirely consumed by flames as a result of the hit.
The Armed Forces confirmed that the wounded individuals are presently receiving emergency care at an on-site medical station and are reported to be in a steady condition. Preparations are currently underway to transfer them to a more advanced medical facility operated by the UN mission for specialised treatment.
Authorities have assured the public that the remainder of the contingent is unharmed, having sought refuge in fortified shelters as the security landscape remains precarious.
In response to the event, Ghana’s diplomatic mission has submitted a formal complaint at the United Nations headquarters, calling on all factions engaged near the UN’s area of operations to fully respect their commitment to ensuring the safety of peacekeeping personnel.
