The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has disclosed that two generation units have returned to service after disruptions linked to the recent fire at GRIDCO’s Akosombo Substation.
This follows public worry over unstable electricity supply after the blaze badly damaged the substation’s control room, affecting power transmission and evacuation capacity.
The minister said the update signals headway in restoring steady power evacuation and delivery to the national grid, while repairs proceed on the remaining units.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, Mr Jinapor noted that urgent technical measures had made the phased recovery of the damaged units possible.
“Through emergency technical interventions, the first-generation unit was successfully restored yesterday. This afternoon, I received confirmation that the second unit has also been brought on and is generating power. The third unit is undergoing works and it will also be brought on as soon as possible,” he said.
He added that engineers are working to bring the facility back to full operation, with more units set to be repaired in the coming days to boost overall grid reliability.
