Two suspected armed robbers were shot dead by the Tema Regional Operations Team on Monday, 13 April 2026, following a robbery attack on a Mobile Money (MoMo) outlet at Community 5 in Tema.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. at Aba Fosuah Plaza. During the attack, the female MoMo vendor sustained a gunshot wound to the leg while attempting to resist the assailants.
According to a statement issued by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for the Tema Regional Police Command, the suspects arrived on a motorbike. One of them approached the vendor under the pretext of conducting a cash-out transaction. However, as the vendor reached for her phone, the suspect brandished a pistol and demanded her bag containing cash.
The situation escalated into a struggle when the victim resisted. The second suspect, who had remained on the motorbike, joined in, and in the course of the altercation, he shot the victim in the leg. The suspects subsequently seized the cash and fled the scene.
A police patrol team from the Regional Operations Unit, which had been strategically deployed in the area, intercepted the suspects near the Tema General Hospital. The suspects ignored police orders to stop and led officers on a chase towards the Smart Hotel area, during which they reportedly opened fire on the police.
The officers returned fire, critically wounding both suspects and causing them to fall from their motorbike. The suspects were transported to the Police Hospital for treatment but were pronounced dead on arrival.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of GH¢11,390.00, believed to be the stolen money, a black 9mm Luger pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition, three Android phones, multiple SIM cards, a talisman, and the victim’s Ghana Card. Police also retrieved an empty bullet shell from the crime scene, suspected to have been discharged from the suspects’ weapon.
The injured vendor is reported to be in stable condition and is receiving medical treatment.
The Tema Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
