President John Dramani Mahama has promised residents of the Upper East Region that work on the long-awaited Upper East Regional Airport will be wrapped up within 24 months.
The President made the pledge on Thursday, August 13, 2026, during a visit to the site designated for the airport. According to President Dramani Mahama, the project is currently going through procurement and he is hopeful that building work will start before the year ends.
He added that the Upper East airport is part of a wider government plan to upgrade aviation facilities nationwide, with similar projects set for Wa and Sunyani. “The project is 24 months and I have been following the process of the procurement. I want us to let it go quickly.
There are three airports we will be building. Wa is getting a new airport, the Upper East is getting an airport and then Sunyani is also getting a new airport and so we hope that by the end of the year, we will come back here and we will cut the sword for the airport to start.”
President Dramani Mahama also noted that while contractors have been given 24 months to complete the job, they believe they can finish it earlier.
“Even though they have given 24 months, the contractors assure us that they can do it in a shorter time than that. And so very soon I will come back, join you, our paramount chiefs and the people of the Upper East to cut the sword on this site for the provision of the airport.”
