Explosions were reported in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s state broadcaster has stated, describing an “exchange of fire” between Iran and the “enemy.”
The US military’s Central Command said US “forces intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with self-defence strikes as US Navy guided-missile destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman.”
Iranian forces launched “multiple missiles, drones and small boats” as three US ships passed through the area, Centcom said.
“Centcom does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces” the statement added.
Meanwhile US President Donald Trump has stated on social media that “great damage” was done to the Iranian ships, and urged Iran to accept a US-proposed deal.
According to the semi-official Fars news agency, explosions have been heard near Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island and Iran’s capital, Tehran.--BBC
