The introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Ghana Premier League is expected to be a game-changer in improving the credibility of the competition. According to Alex Kotey, the Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the use of VAR will help eliminate controversial refereeing decisions that have plagued the league for years.
The Ghana Premier League has been under constant scrutiny for inconsistent and questionable officiating, with fans and players frequently questioning referees’ decisions. Even the President of the GFA, Kurt Okraku, has expressed dissatisfaction with some calls, adding fuel to the ongoing debate.
But Alex Kotey believes that VAR could be the solution to these persistent issues. In a recent interview with Ghana FA Media, Kotey emphasized the importance of having VAR as a part of the league’s structure to ensure fair play.
“VAR watches every incident of the game. By doing that, the credibility in our game would be very, very high. And when there’s credibility, it means there’ll be more money coming into the league,” Kotey stated.
