Wacam, a human rights and environmental mining NGO, has responded to a publication by The Fourth Estate titled “Illegal mining spree on Manhyia-linked concession.” Wacam clarifies that its Technical Director’s views were misconstrued in the article.
According to a statement signed by the Executive Director of Wacam, Mr. Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, portions of the interview with the Technical Director were referenced in a manner that created a false impression.
The statement emphasised that the interview was sought on general issues regarding mining operations that do not conform to the law and human rights violations associated with such activities.
Wacam stated that the interview was conducted in 2024, and its remarks were not targeted at a specific mining company nor Manhyia. The NGO explained that the interview was made within the broader context of responsible mining practices, legal compliance, and the necessity of regulatory oversight.
Furthermore, Wacam corrected the attribution of Dr. Kwaku Afriyie as its Technical Director, stating this is incorrect.
The NGO urged The Fourth Estate to rectify this error in the interest of accuracy and fair reporting.
“As an advocate for human rights and environmental justice, Wacam emphasized that mining activities must be conducted in strict adherence to legal and regulatory frameworks to prevent environmental degradation and human rights violations,” the statement noted.
The NGO regretted any misrepresentation of its comments in the publication and called on The Fourth Estate to ensure that Wacam’s views are not misconstrued in their reportage.
