The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on the government to urgently provide relief and support for residents displaced by flooding following the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the MP described the situation in parts of his constituency as critical, revealing that he had spent the past three days assisting residents trapped by floodwaters.
“Mr Speaker, it hasn’t been easy at all. I have been swimming for the past three days, helping people to evacuate. My people are suffering. Weija Gbawe is under siege,” he stated.
The flooding follows the opening of all five spill gates of the Weija Dam as part of routine measures to manage rising water inflows and protect the structural integrity of the dam. The exercise caused water levels downstream to rise significantly, inundating several surrounding communities.
According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), at least 85 affected residents have so far been relocated to designated safe shelters as emergency response efforts continue.
