The Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove, Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, has raised concerns over delays in the implementation of the Petroleum Hub project, warning that growing frustration among young people in the Western Region could undermine confidence in the initiative.
Speaking at a meeting between the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) and the Western Regional House of Chiefs on Thursday, April 9, 2026, he noted that the project was originally presented as a major employment opportunity for the region’s youth, but prolonged delays have led to increasing doubts about its realisation.
He stressed that although traditional authorities continue to support the project, its slow pace of implementation is weakening public confidence. He therefore urged government and PHDC officials to accelerate progress and move from planning to visible construction on the ground.
According to him, land designated for the project has remained undeveloped for years, with outstanding payments still unresolved. He added that repeated assurances have not yet translated into tangible progress, deepening concerns among local communities.
“The delay is making some of our youth lose hope in the project,” he stated, calling for urgent action to ensure job creation opportunities materialise.
His concerns were echoed by the Paramount Chief of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, who also warned that confidence in the project is declining across the region due to its slow implementation.
He observed that despite repeated government assurances, little visible progress has been made over recent years, contributing to growing scepticism among traditional leaders and communities. He further emphasised the need for greater transparency and sustained engagement between project authorities and stakeholders.
In response, Toni Aubynn assured the chiefs that the Petroleum Hub project remains fully supported by government and continues to attract investor interest. He indicated that recent global geopolitical developments have reinforced the strategic importance of the initiative.
He further disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has taken a keen interest in the project and directed the Ministries of Lands and Energy to expedite land acquisition processes as part of efforts to accelerate implementation.
