Eleven individuals arrested during a recent police operation targeting narcotics trafficking in Tamale have been arraigned before court, facing charges related to the use and possession of illicit substances.
The suspects were picked up by the Regional Counter Terrorism Unit’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as “Red Maria,” and charged with offences including unauthorised use and possession of narcotics and restricted drugs.
Appearing before the Tamale Circuit Court, presided over by Judge Francis Asobayire on Monday, March 18, five of the accused pleaded not guilty and were granted bail. Two others admitted the charges and opted to pay fines instead of serving custodial sentences.

One of the convicts, Agyei Abraham, 25, was fined 250 penalty units—equivalent to GH¢3,000 (about $250)—for unlawful possession of narcotics. Another, Haruna Abuabkari, 30, was fined 200 penalty units, amounting to GH¢2,400, for a similar offence.
The remaining six suspects were remanded into custody, with their cases adjourned to March 24 and April 7.

Police authorities say the arrests form part of a broader crackdown on drug-related activities in the Northern Region. They reaffirmed their commitment to disrupting the circulation of illicit substances and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
According to the police, the operation highlights their resolve to tackle narcotics trafficking and safeguard communities across the region.
