The Ghana Police have arrested 26 individuals, including 8 Chinese nationals and 18 Ghanaians, for engaging in illegal mining activities in a forest reserve near Samreboi in the Western Region. The operation, led by the Police Intelligence Directorate in collaboration with other units, targeted a concession linked to Akonta Mining Company, owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.
The police recovered a significant amount of tools and machinery, including six pump-action guns, six water pumping machines, three excavators, and three payloaders. The suspects are currently in custody and will face court proceedings soon.
The operation highlights the devastating impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment, with vast stretches of land stripped of vegetation and water bodies polluted by mining sludge. The police action underscores the government’s commitment to restoring Ghana’s natural ecosystems and bringing offenders to justice.
Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has reiterated the police administration’s dedication to tackling illegal mining. The operation demonstrates a renewed effort to address the menace of galamsey, which continues to threaten Ghana’s environmental and economic well-being.
