The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given the government a 14-day deadline to act swiftly on claims that teachers were attacked by soldiers in the Western Region.
The alleged incident is said to involve personnel from the 2nd Infantry Battalion based at Apremdo in Takoradi, sparking outrage among educators, especially in the Wassa West District, where some claim they were beaten and publicly humiliated.
Speaking to journalists, the GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, called the episode part of a troubling trend of aggression toward teachers, stating that the trend had reached an intolerable level.
He noted that educators are facing rising hostility from various groups, including pupils, parents and now security forces.
“For us as GNAT, our motto always stands, ‘We live to teach.’ However, it looks like some stakeholders are becoming a stumbling block on our way,” he said. “These students, some of them have been beating teachers. Some parents also go to schools and beat teachers. And now the military people too have joined the beating,” he said. “And we are telling ourselves that if the state cannot protect us, then we are not safe.”
