The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has launched a nationwide operation targeting illegal mining activities. The crackdown, which began earlier this week, has resulted in the arrest of 30 suspects in the Western, Ashanti, and Central Regions.

A major operation in Huniso, Western Region, led to the apprehension of 13 individuals, who were later remanded by the Tarkwa Circuit Court and are set to reappear on June 6, 2025. In the Ashanti Region, police raided an illegal mining site near Asare Bediako Senior High School, arresting nine suspects who used explosives that damaged school property.

Another operation was conducted on May 29 at Dunkwa-On-Offin, Central Region, where two illegal miners were arrested while operating excavators. A separate raid in Wassa Dadieso resulted in the arrest of several suspects, and over 135 chanfan machines were destroyed in Wassa Gyapa.

All suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations and expected to face formal charges soon. The police have vowed to continue operations to combat illegal mining and its environmental impacts. Further actions are planned to tackle this menace.
