‘Free Salomey Now!’ – Women Protest in Accra, Give Mahama 24 Hours to Act

A group of women has taken to the streets of Accra to demand the immediate release of Salomey Awitey Baffoe, who remains in custody as authorities continue investigations into a cyber-related case.

Chanting “Free Salomey now!” the protesters participated in the “Women’s Voices Matter” demonstration, which began at the AMA Park before proceeding to the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The protesters called on President John Dramani Mahama and relevant state authorities to intervene, giving the President 24 hours to act.

“John Mahama, free Salomey!” some of the protesters chanted, while others shouted, “We are tired of John!”

Emotions ran high during the demonstration, with some participants breaking down in tears as they questioned the circumstances surrounding Ms Baffoe’s continued detention and demanded what they described as justice and fair treatment.

Ms Baffoe, 40, was arrested during a midnight operation at her home in Hansua in the Techiman Municipality of the Bono East Region on Sunday, September 13.

On September 24, the High Court denied a bail application filed on her behalf after prosecutors argued that she was still required to assist with ongoing investigations.

The court was told that the investigation was cyber-related and that releasing her at that stage could create a risk of interference with witnesses. The court subsequently directed the Republic to expedite its investigations.

The protesters, however, questioned the need to keep Ms Baffoe in custody while investigations continue, arguing that her detention had become prolonged and unfair.

They said the demonstration was also intended to highlight broader concerns about the treatment of women and ensure their voices are heard when they raise concerns about the justice system and other national issues.

For the demonstrators, the protest extends beyond Ms Baffoe’s case to broader questions about the treatment, economic wellbeing and representation of women.

The protesters continued their chants at the EOCO premises, directing much of their appeal to President Mahama and demanding Ms Baffoe’s release.

Meanwhile, attention is turning to the next stage of the legal proceedings, with Ms Baffoe expected to return to court on Tuesday, September 30.
