Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has praised President John Dramani Mahama following the government’s rejection of a proposed United States health compact over conditions Cabinet considered unacceptable.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Sarkodie thanked the President, expressing hope that the decision would contribute to restoring Ghana’s respect on the international stage.
“Thank you, Mr. President… Hopefully one day we gain back the full respect deserved,” he wrote.
His reaction follows President Mahama’s disclosure that Cabinet rejected the proposed agreement after raising concerns about several of its provisions.
Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Friday, September 25, 2026, President Mahama said the compact had been presented as a replacement for health funding Ghana lost following the termination of USAID support.
According to him, the Ministry of Health reviewed the proposal and subsequently prepared a Cabinet Information Paper for consideration.
“And so the compact was brought to the cabinet, and we flagged several things in the compact,” President Mahama said.
Among the concerns raised was a provision requiring Ghana to provide information on its pathogen profile, including diseases endemic to the country.
“It means that diseases that are endemic in Ghana. What are diseases endemic in Ghana? What is the pathogen profile of a country? I’m sure there are medical experts who understand that better than me,” he said.
President Mahama said Cabinet also questioned a requirement for Ghana to provide medical records under the proposed arrangement.
“I mean, who takes another country’s medical records? And so that was strange,” he said.
He further disclosed that Ghana would have been required to contribute a specified amount of funding to the programme.
Another provision, according to the President, would have restricted the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) from inspecting medicines and other medical products brought into Ghana under the agreement.
President Mahama described the conditions as “humiliating” and said Cabinet rejected the proposal shortly after considering it.
“I mean, it was humiliating. And so it was the compact that was thrown out in record time in our cabinet. I’ve never seen anything thrown out as fast as that. And so, of course, we rejected it,” he said.
Sarkodie’s reaction has since added to public discussion surrounding the proposed compact and the government’s decision not to proceed with the agreement.
