The 50MW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) generating power station in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region is complete and fully operational. This is as a result of the completion of the construction of the power station, which has been connected to the national grid.
The connection of the Yendi Solar Farm to national grid was done by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), which undertook the integration of a 4-kilometre, 161-kilovolt (kV) transmission line linking the Yendi Solar Plant to the Tamale-Yendi transmission network. The integration also involved the absorption of a 66-megavolt-ampere transformer in the transmission system.
These details came to light when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and Mines led by its Chair, Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, accompanied by the Ranking Member Hon. George Kwame Aboagye and other members, in a high-powered delegation, paid a working visit to inspect the completion of a 50MW Solar PV generating power station in the Yendi District of the Northern Region on October 26, 2026.
The inspection visit was to offer first hand update on the progress of work on the first and largest wholly-owned Ghanaian initiative, which started about three years ago, executed by First Sky Limited, a member of the First Sky Group and first-class road and civil engineering firm, on behalf of Bui Power Authority, the nation’s renewable energy leader.
Sharing a brief on the progress of work, executed on behalf of BPA, Mr. Charles Edem Gidi, Chair of the Project Implementation Team and Director of Finance of First Sky Group, disclosed that the project was a local initiative designed and implemented solely by local expertise and was a model for future solar projects in the country.
He explained that the power station was technically ready by September 11, 2026 and got connected to the national grid after commissioning tests were done and followed by commencement of commercial operations.
In an update from Bui Power Authority (BPA), Peter Acheampong, Director of Engineering told the Parliament Select Committee on Energy and Mines that the BPA by the end of 2026 would have installed about 300MW of power in the Bui enclave with Yendi Solar Power station being the first outside the enclave. He was convinced that with the Yendi Solar Power Station on board the national grid, there would be increase reliability of power supply within the Northern parts of the country.
Chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and Mines, Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah commended First Sky Ltd for the exemplary local engineering leadership in the execution and completion of a complex project of such magnitude praising the bold initiative through the partnership between First Sky Ltd and Bui Power Authority.
He explained that Ghana’s move towards 10%-15% renewable energy in the total grid mix was on course with the completion and connection of the Yendi Solar 50 MW PV plant to the national grid, which sits on a 140 acres of land, with the expectation by 2030, that the target would be feasible.
Ranking Member, Hon. George Kwame Aboagye and other members of the Committee reiterated the need for the full protection and maintenance regime to preserve such a national asset serving a critical public good and purpose. They praised First Sky Ltd and Bui Power Authority for the partnership offering massive opportunities for job creation in the Yendi Constituency and stressed the importance of protecting the strategic energy infrastructure to support sustainable energy generation and development.
The Committee also was full of commendation for the partnering banks, Republic Bank and Zenith Bank for their financial support which was critical to the realisation of the project.
The banks on their part expressed their full belief in the green transition agenda, coupled with the track record of First Sky Ltd in their business relationship, as a trusted wholly owned Ghanaian company with requisite expertise, which motivated the financing of the 50MW PV Solar project.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Yendi, Hon. Sugri Muniru, who joined the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy on the visit to the 50MW Solar PV Power Plant in Yendi vowed the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring adequate security at the facility to prevent theft, protect the installations, and safeguard the project land against encroachment.
He also expressed his appreciation to the contractor, First Sky Ltd, BPA and the Banks for their commitment to the commencement and completion of the project.
