Former President John Agyekum Kufuor is deeply worried about the current state of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to Okaikwei Central MP, Patrick Yaw Boamah. Boamah disclosed that Kufuor’s concerns stem from the party’s waning culture and internal discipline, which he believes are crucial to its success.
Mr. Boamah revealed that he had a personal interaction with Kufuor at the funeral of retired Justice Sulemana Gbadegbe, where the former President expressed his unease about the party’s cohesion and direction. “He is worried about the state of the party, that I can tell you for free,” Boamah stated. Kufuor’s concerns reflect broader worries within the NPP about internal divisions, weak leadership, and the party’s readiness to regroup after losing power in 2024.
He called for the national executives of the party to do more to restore discipline and unity. He emphasized the importance of strong internal leadership, citing the NPP’s historical success under firm and principled chairmen who could intervene decisively in party affairs. “We’ve been used to strong chairmen who could correct even the flagbearer or marshal his National Executive Officers to sit the president or the flagbearer down to put in place some arrangement for the betterment of the party,” Boamah said.
Mr. Boamah’s remarks highlight the need for respected figures within the party, such as former Presidents Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to intervene and ease tensions within the party. By working together, they can help restore order and unity, refocusing the party on its core values ¹.
