Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has asserted that former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia deserves recognition for the Gold-for-Reserve policy currently being implemented by the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
Responding to the President’s address in Parliament on Friday, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the policy has contributed to recent economic gains. However, he argued that the intellectual foundation of the initiative predates the current administration.
“The President is telling us today that some gains have been made through this Gold-for-Reserve policy,” he said. “Mr Speaker, what they have failed to tell Ghanaians is that the Bawumia they attacked is the brainchild of this policy.”
The Minority Leader maintained that while it is commendable for the government to continue policies that yield positive results, proper credit must be given to those who conceived them.
Invoking a local proverb, Afenyo-Markin urged the government to rise above partisan considerations and acknowledge the contributions of its political opponents where due.
“Mr Speaker, I would want to urge the government to give to Bawumia what belongs to Bawumia,” he stated.
His remarks add a political dimension to ongoing parliamentary debate over the origins and impact of the Gold-for-Reserve policy, which has been cited as a key tool in strengthening Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and stabilising the currency.
