St. Kitts And Nevis PM Says Mahama’s UN Speech Inspired Visit To Ghana

Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Michael Drew, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly last year played a decisive role in his decision to visit Ghana.

Delivering remarks at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, March 4, during his official visit, Dr. Drew said he was deeply moved by the President’s address and immediately informed his team of his desire to meet him.

“There are many speeches delivered at the UN General Assembly, but yours stood out to me,” he said.

“Your speech inspired me. I told my team that I wanted to meet you — and today, not only am I meeting you, but you have warmly welcomed me. Thank you very much.”

Beyond diplomacy, Dr. Drew described his arrival in Ghana as a profoundly personal experience, saying he felt an immediate sense of belonging.

“As I arrived in Ghana and was driving along the streets, I could not tell the difference whether I was at home or in a foreign country,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the relationship between Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis extends far deeper than formal state relations.

“We come not only as diplomatic partners, but as family reconnecting across the Atlantic,” he said. “Saint Kitts and Nevis and Ghana share more than diplomatic ties; we share history.”

He noted that while the transatlantic slave trade forcibly linked their ancestors, it failed to erase their cultural identity and resilience.

“The transatlantic slave trade may have connected our ancestors, but it did not erase their identity, culture, intellect or resilience,” Dr. Drew stated.

“In our music, our spirituality, our cuisine and our communal traditions, the spirit of Africa lives on in Saint Kitts and Nevis and throughout the Caribbean.”

His visit underscores renewed efforts to strengthen cooperation between West Africa and the Caribbean — ties grounded not only in diplomacy and trade, but in shared heritage and enduring cultural bonds.
