The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is preparing to increase its production capacity as part of efforts to improve operations and boost output in Ghana.
The refinery is currently undertaking technical processes aimed at expanding its processing capacity from 28,000 barrels per stream day to 45,000 barrels per stream day.
According to officials, the expansion will be achieved through the integration of an additional processing unit known as the F61 unit, which will operate alongside the existing F1 unit.
Both units will be linked to the refinery’s crude distillation system to improve efficiency and increase overall output.
Management said engineers are currently carrying out technical procedures required to incorporate the new unit into the refinery’s processing system following the resumption of operations.
Once the integration is completed, output is expected to increase significantly from the current 28,000 barrels per stream day to 45,000 barrels per stream day.
The refinery is currently operating under a tolling arrangement, where private companies supply crude oil to the facility for processing.
Under this system, the refinery processes the crude and charges a fee, while the refined petroleum products are returned to the companies that supplied the crude.
Corporate Affairs Officer of TOR, Godwin Mahama Ayaba, disclosed the development in an interview on Citi FM on Monday, March 9.
He explained that under the tolling arrangement, the refinery does not handle the marketing or distribution of the finished products, as those responsibilities remain with the crude oil suppliers.
Mr Ayaba added that while the refinery’s current nameplate capacity is 28,000 barrels per stream day, the addition of the F61 unit will increase output to 45,000 barrels per stream day.
He also indicated that management is considering plans to further expand the refinery’s capacity to about 60,000 barrels per stream day in the medium term.
