The Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has warned that the government will take decisive action against individuals illegally occupying land around the Weija Dam.

The minister issued the warning during a tour of the dam on Wednesday, March 11, where he inspected the area following concerns about increasing human activities within the dam’s buffer zone.

Speaking to the media after the visit, Mr Adjei said authorities had observed several forms of encroachment, including building construction, farming and sand-winning activities in areas designated for protection.

“We’ve seen that there’s encroachment going on. People are building, farmers are farming around, and from pictures we have seen, there are also sand-winning activities taking place,” he said.

According to the minister, the Ministry will collaborate with other government institutions to address the issue and prevent further encroachment.

He said he would engage the Minister for Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to work with local authorities in enforcing regulations around the dam.

Mr Adjei also indicated that discussions would be held with the Ministry of National Security to strengthen enforcement measures.

The government, he said, intends to ensure that those already occupying the protected area face appropriate sanctions to deter further violations.

The Weija dam plays a critical role in water supply and flood control for parts of the region, making the protection of its surrounding buffer zone a national priority.
