Youths in Tema yesterday stormed the premises of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), demanding President John Dramani Mahama appoints an indigene as the next Mayor of Tema.
The protestors used burning car tyres and rhythmic drumbeats to convey their message.
The agitation stemmed from reports suggesting Ebi Bright was being considered for the position, despite Patience Ankamah Addo initially being favoured.
Dora Sappor, a concerned youth from Tema, expressed disappointment over Ebi Bright’s potential appointment.
“We are here with a heavy heart to register our displeasure. We are hearing that Ebi Bright is to be made the Mayor of Tema, but that is not going to happen.
She was not even part of the whole process, so why are they bringing her to be the mayor?
This is something we will not understand. This is the only demand of the youth of Tema East and the traditional leaders,” she stated.
The youths believe an indigene would better understand and address local community needs. “We want someone the people can identify with — a son or daughter of the land. That’s all we’re asking for. It’s not about being better than others, but about fair and appropriate representation,” Dora Sappor added. All 25 clan houses in Tema reportedly support this idea, citing trust, cultural connection, and efficient governance.
