Ghana and the United States of America (USA) have reaffirmed their commitment to boosting economic cooperation, focusing on the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), during high-level Washington talks.

The Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, met US officials, highlighting AGOA’s role in Ghana-US trade.

The programme, granting African countries duty-free US access, has supported Ghana’s exports, particularly textiles and agriculture.

Though initially set to expire in 2024, AGOA’s been extended three years.

Analysts say it has created jobs and boosted non-traditional exports, but underutilisation remains a concern. Both sides explored new cooperation avenues, focusing on AGOA and the Millennium Challenge Corporation. The talks come as African countries push for AGOA’s extension and reform. Ablakwa praised the US for improving Accra visa processing, reducing wait times. Ghana and the US reaffirmed their commitment to deepening ties for mutual benefit, discussing 2026 FIFA World Cup cooperation. The renewed AGOA focus underscores its importance in Ghana’s trade diplomacy, driving industrialisation and global market access.
