The High Court in Accra has sentenced Richard Appiah, a footballer and draughtsman convicted of murdering two children at Abesim in the Bono Region, to life imprisonment.
The case dates back to August 2021, when police in Abesim, near Sunyani, arrested Appiah after discovering the bodies of two boys in his residence. Investigators found some body parts stored in a refrigerator in his living quarters, a revelation that sparked nationwide shock and condemnation.
Police reports indicated that Appiah had allegedly killed at least two boys — 12-year-old Louis Agyemang, believed to be his stepbrother, and 15-year-old Stephen Sarpong, the son of a family friend.
Following his arrest, Appiah was variously described in media reports as a footballer, sports commentator, and architect. However, the Ghana Institute of Architects later clarified that he was not a registered architect.
During his time in custody, reports also suggested he displayed unusual behaviour and made specific food demands, prompting investigators to request a psychiatric evaluation as part of the probe.
Court Proceedings
The trial experienced several procedural delays, including adjournments caused by the absence of jurors at certain stages.
Despite the setbacks, prosecutors presented evidence linking Appiah to the killings. After hearing the case, a seven-member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict on two counts of murder.
Presiding judge Justice Aryeetey subsequently sentenced Appiah to life imprisonment, citing the gravity and brutality of the offences.
The case has renewed public attention on community safety concerns, as well as the importance of thorough investigations and effective judicial processes in addressing violent crime.
