Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that he held high-level talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine, with discussions centred on Ghana’s appeal for the release of two Ghanaian nationals being held as prisoners of war.
In a post shared after the meeting, Mr Ablakwa said the engagement focused on humanitarian grounds for securing the freedom of the detained citizens, expressing optimism that ongoing negotiations would yield positive results.
He indicated that the bilateral talks also examined collaborative measures to combat trafficking networks that lure vulnerable African youth into conflict zones, where they risk their lives amid the ongoing war.
The Minister further conveyed the gratitude of President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana to President Zelenskyy for ensuring that the rights of the detained Ghanaians are being protected in accordance with international law.
Beyond the humanitarian discussions, both sides agreed to deepen diplomatic and economic cooperation, outlining strategic areas of engagement in agriculture, defence, education and trade.
President Zelenskyy has also extended a formal invitation to President Mahama as Kyiv moves to strengthen diplomatic ties with Accra.
Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, stressing that every Ghanaian life remains a priority to the Mahama administration.
