Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has asked the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice to examine and move a criminal matter linked to an alleged shooting involving her and eight other suspects from the Adenta Circuit Court to the High Court.
In a filing dated June 25, 2026, her legal team contended that the Adenta Circuit Court cannot handle the case because the main charge was a first-degree felony, an offence that can only be tried by the High Court.
Adwoa Safo was said to have been fired at repeatedly on June 21, while seated in her car outside the home of her brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, who is also named among the accused in the matter.
The petition indicated that she suffered severe wounds to the left side of her face, the rear of her head, her left ear and lower jaw, with metal fragments embedded in her skull.
It also stated that her Toyota Land Cruiser Prado bore clear bullet damage. The ex-MP’s brother and eight other individuals were taken into custody and arraigned.
They were subsequently released on bail of GH¢500,000 with two sureties. The suspects face charges including use of an offensive weapon, possession of explosives, firearms and ammunition, engagement in vigilante activities, firing guns within a township and causing unlawful destruction.
However, counsel for the former MP argued that the charge of using an offensive weapon to deliberately and unlawfully inflict injury was a first-degree felony and must therefore be heard on indictment in the High Court.
“Respectfully, the offence of intentionally and unlawfully causing harm with the use of an offensive weapon is a first-degree felony and is triable on indictment before the High Court, not the Circuit Court,” the petition stated.
The legal team further argued that the Circuit Court “lacks jurisdiction to entertain the matter, let alone consider an application for bail in respect of the accused persons.”
They are urging the Attorney-General to request the police docket, assess the file, and have the case presented before the High Court to allow what they termed a complete and timely trial.
“In view of the aforesaid, we have been duly instructed to petition your office to call for the docket, review and have the case filed at the High Court for the matter to go through full trial in an expeditious manner,” the petition said.
Copies of the filing were forwarded to the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Presiding Judge of the Adenta Circuit Court, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander and Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo.
