Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has warned the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSG) not to compromise professional standards in an effort to grow the sector, stressing that quality must be the defining feature of pharmacy training and practice.
Addressing the Society as Special Guest of Honour at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Sunday, June 28, during its 90th Anniversary celebration, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said the future of pharmacy in Ghana would hinge on the calibre of professionals produced, not the size of the workforce.
He urged them to reaffirm their value in the country’s health system by placing patients at the centre of their work. The event at Manhyia Palace assembled members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, giving them a platform to reflect on the history of pharmacy education in the country from its beginnings to now, and to propose ideas for the way ahead.
He also called on the government to make the training and deployment of pharmacists a priority in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare delivery. “I will state this plainly, no health system can function effectively without a strong, well trained and properly utilised pharmaceutical workforce.
Investments in healthcare must include deliberate attention to the development and deployment of pharmacists across all levels of care. I expect that we will move forward and clarify discipline and purpose,” he stated.
