A former traditional priestess turned evangelist, Nana Agradaa, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for defrauding people through a money-doubling scheme. However, her lawyer, Richard Asare Baffour, has announced plans to appeal the decision, describing it as a “miscarriage of justice” and “travesty of justice”.
Agradaa was found guilty of two counts of defrauding by false pretenses and was fined GH¢300 for charlatanic advertisement, with a 30-day custodial sentence in default of payment. The court handed down the sentence after the prosecution argued for a stiff penalty to deter similar fraudulent acts.
Baffour expressed disappointment with the court’s decision, citing flawed reasoning. He had pleaded for leniency, citing Agradaa’s role as a mother of five and her remorseful conduct during the trial. Agradaa’s legal team plans to file an appeal, hoping to overturn the sentence or reduce its severity.
