The Minister for Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced the successful restoration of an additional generating unit at the Akosombo Dam, marking a significant step toward strengthening Ghana’s electricity supply.
In an update issued on Tuesday night, the Minister confirmed that the fourth unit of the hydroelectric facility was brought back into operation at 9:09 p.m., describing the development as a positive advancement in ongoing efforts to enhance power generation.
The restoration comes amid recent strain on the national power system, with intermittent outages reported in parts of Accra and other areas due to technical challenges and rising electricity demand.
As the backbone of Ghana’s energy mix, the Akosombo Dam plays a central role in national electricity generation. Improvements in its operational capacity are therefore critical to stabilising supply and reducing disruptions.
Mr. Jinapor commended the engineers and technical teams involved in the restoration, attributing the progress to their expertise and commitment.
The addition of the fourth unit is expected to ease pressure on the national grid, particularly during peak demand periods. In recent weeks, authorities have cited increased consumption and infrastructure constraints, including overloaded transformers, as contributing factors to the power challenges.
Although the exact megawatt contribution of the restored unit was not disclosed, analysts suggest that even incremental increases in output from Akosombo can have a meaningful stabilising effect on the grid.
The development is anticipated to provide some relief to households and businesses affected by recent power fluctuations, as efforts continue to strengthen generation and distribution capacity nationwide.
