Ghanaian digital satellite television channel Akwaba Magic has marked its fifth anniversary with a renewed commitment to delivering back-to-back local productions and promoting authentic Ghanaian storytelling.
The 24-hour general entertainment channel, owned by MultiChoice Ghana Limited, says it remains focused on supporting the growth of the country’s creative industry while providing a dedicated platform for homegrown content.
The anniversary launch, held on Monday at the MultiChoice Ghana head office, brought together actors, directors, producers, technical crew and emerging talents to celebrate five years of Ghanaian content on DStv. Launched in March 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Akwaba Magic was created to offer a stable, high-quality outlet exclusively for Ghanaian productions.
Over the past five years, the channel has produced hundreds of hours of drama series, reality shows and movies, while also licensing content from independent producers nationwide.
Managing Director of MultiChoice Ghana Limited, Alex Okyere, said the channel was established to address a gap in Ghana’s media landscape by providing a consistent space for local stories, languages and talent to thrive.
Industry players at the event acknowledged the platform’s impact, particularly during the COVID-19 period when production opportunities were limited. Actor Jessica Larny noted that the channel helped sustain creatives during a difficult time for the industry.
Head of Channel for Akwaba Magic, Nosisa Doe, said the station has evolved into a cultural force, blending tradition with contemporary storytelling. She highlighted productions such as House of Klu, Nana Akoto, M’asaase and Sika Boto as examples of content that reflects Ghanaian life and strengthens cultural pride.
Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, James Gardiner, commended the channel for energising the creative ecosystem through investment in original productions that have created jobs and expanded opportunities for both emerging and established talents.
As it enters its next phase, Akwaba Magic says it will deepen collaboration with local producers and increase investment in original content to expand the reach of Ghanaian stories across Africa and beyond.
