The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has intensified efforts to reclaim public spaces in the capital, clearing unauthorised structures and trading activities around the Achimota New Overhead Ayalolo bus stop to improve access for commercial buses and commuters.
The operation, led by Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, targeted structures and trading activities obstructing the designated bus stop, which serves Ayalolo and other commercial buses.
The exercise is intended to provide buses with adequate space to pick up and drop off passengers, reduce obstructions and improve traffic flow around the busy transport hub.
It forms part of a broader enforcement campaign by the AMA and the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly to remove unauthorised structures and trading activities occupying public spaces.
Bus stops targeted
The two assemblies say the operation is aimed at restoring bus stops to their intended purpose and preventing commercial activities from disrupting public transport services.
Structures and trading activities around loading and offloading points can restrict bus access, impede passenger movement and contribute to congestion, particularly at busy transport interchanges.
By clearing the area around the Achimota interchange, the authorities hope to enable commercial vehicles, especially Ayalolo buses, to serve commuters more efficiently without navigating obstructions at designated stops.
Wider public-space enforcement
The collaboration between the AMA and the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly is expected to extend beyond the Achimota bus stop to other areas where public spaces have been occupied by unauthorised structures and trading activities.
The initiative seeks to keep bus stops accessible to transport operators and commuters while discouraging activities that obstruct their use.
The clearance forms part of broader efforts by the assemblies to restore order along the city’s transport corridors, improve traffic management and facilitate the movement of people and vehicles.
The authorities are expected to continue enforcing regulations on the use of public spaces as part of measures to address congestion and improve access to public transport.
