Security concerns are rising in the Agona East District after an armed robbery attack left an assembly member hospitalised.
Ishmael Odoom, Assembly Member for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, was hit by a stray bullet when armed robbers attacked the community on Thursday, March 5, 2026, around 5:00 p.m.
The attackers reportedly fired sporadic gunshots to disperse residents while robbing shops and vendors of cash. Mr Odoom, who was nearby during the incident, was caught in the crossfire.
He was first taken to the Agona Swedru Government Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for further care.
Residents say the incident reflects growing insecurity in the area. Former assembly member Abeiku Ansah noted that similar attacks have occurred recently and called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify patrols along the Agona Swedru–Asafo road.
The District Chief Executive for Agona East, Samuel Oscar Mensah, later visited the community to assess the situation and assure residents of improved security measures.
He said the District Security Council would adopt strategies to prevent further attacks and advised business owners to strengthen security, including installing CCTV cameras around their shops.
Residents are now calling for a stronger and more permanent police presence along major roads in the district as they await updates on Mr Odoom’s condition.
