The Ghana Police Service has described the Ayawaso East by-election as one of the most peaceful in recent history, assuring the public that adequate security measures remain in place as the process moves to the final phase.
Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, made the remarks after the close of polls on Tuesday, March 3.
According to her, the Inspector-General of Police personally monitored proceedings on the ground to ensure that the security deployment and operational measures were functioning as planned.
“As we usually do, the IGP likes to be on the ground to ensure that the deployment we have put in place is working as expected,” she said, noting that the IGP, the Regional Commander, operations officers and other personnel were present throughout the exercise.
DCOP Ansah-Akrofi stated that security personnel visited several polling stations during the day and observed a calm and orderly voting process.
“You have monitored the election from the beginning until now, and you can testify that this has been one of the most peaceful by-elections we have witnessed as a country,” she said.
With polls closed and collation underway, she expressed confidence that security arrangements at the collation centre are sufficient to handle any situation.
“We are confident that our deployment at the collation centre is adequate to cater for any eventuality,” she assured.
She disclosed that no incidents were recorded during the voting process, attributing the smooth exercise to effective planning and stakeholder cooperation.
“Our men were prepared to respond to any situation if it had arisen. Thankfully, everything went peacefully. We have not recorded any incidents,” she added.
The Police spokesperson commended residents of the constituency for their conduct and urged Ghanaians to continue upholding peaceful democratic values.
“Election is not about fighting or violence. It is about coming out to cast your vote, making your choice and allowing peace to prevail,” she emphasised.
