Ayawaso East MP-elect Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described his return to Parliament as the fulfilment of a long-held promise made by his 93-year-old mother.
Baba Jamal secured victory in the Ayawaso East by-election with 10,884 votes, defeating Yussif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who polled 4,009 votes.
Speaking in an interview after being declared winner, he expressed gratitude to God for the outcome. “I want to thank the Almighty Allah for giving us this victory,” he said.
He stressed that the win was not a personal triumph but one shared with the people of the constituency. According to him, the mandate belongs to the residents of Ayawaso East who placed their confidence in him.
The MP-elect dedicated the victory to his mother, Mimi, crediting her unwavering belief in his political comeback. He said her vision of seeing him return to Parliament had finally been realised, describing the moment as deeply personal and emotional.
Baba Jamal also acknowledged the sacrifices made by his immediate family. He thanked his wife and children for their endurance and support throughout his political journey, noting that their encouragement had sustained him.
Beyond his family, he extended appreciation to the leadership of the NDC, including the party’s national executives, regional leadership in Greater Accra, and constituency executives in Ayawaso East. He also recognised supporters from Akwatia who travelled to back his campaign.
He reserved special mention for President John Dramani Mahama, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve in Nigeria. According to him, the experience he gained during his time there would enhance his contributions in Parliament.
Looking ahead, Baba Jamal assured constituents that his focus would be on development and renewal in the area. He declared that the “resetting” of Ayawaso East begins immediately and pledged to work toward delivering the progress the constituency deserves.
He further thanked members of the media for their coverage throughout the campaign period and called for a constructive partnership going forward. He encouraged journalists to hold him accountable while maintaining professionalism as they work together in the interest of the constituency.
