The candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal, has been declared winner of the Ayawaso East by-election.
The official results were announced on Tuesday evening by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), triggering jubilant celebrations among supporters across the constituency.
The by-election was conducted on Tuesday, March 3, to fill the vacancy created by the death of the late Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, in January. Voters turned out across several polling stations to elect a new representative.
Baba Jamal contested the seat against four other candidates: Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and two independent candidates, Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda and David Kanor.
Pre-election projections had pointed to a strong showing for the NDC candidate, a trend that was ultimately reflected in the final results.
Although voter turnout appeared low in the early hours of polling, observers suggested that the Ramadan fast may have influenced the timing of voter participation, with more residents arriving later in the day.
Security remained tight throughout the exercise. Ahead of the vote, the Ghana Police Service assured the public of robust measures to maintain peace before, during and after the poll. Officers were deployed to all polling stations and key points within the constituency.
Police officials described the atmosphere at polling centres as calm and orderly, noting that personnel on the ground were adequately prepared to address any situation as counting and collation proceeded.
The Inspector-General of Police also toured selected polling stations as voting drew to a close.
