The Speaker says Parliament will reconsider the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill at its next sitting to correct errors identified in the version previously approved.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has assured Ghanaians that the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, will be passed into law after Parliament undertakes a second consideration of the legislation.

Mr Bagbin said the bill would be reconsidered during Parliament’s next sitting to address errors identified in the version initially approved, particularly those arising from last-minute amendments.

Speaking at the ongoing IPR Ghana 2026 National PR Conference and Excellence Awards in Koforidua, the Speaker stressed that the legislation should be treated as a matter of national consensus rather than partisan politics.

He explained that the bill’s initial passage occurred in his absence and was rushed, prompting him to call for a review of the process.

“When the law was rushed through at the last minute at my back, I came out and said no way, this bill must go through as a consensus bill. We don’t want partisanship in it. It is for everybody. It means a lot to Ghanaians,” he said.

Parliament to Correct Identified Errors

Mr Bagbin said Parliament had identified several mistakes in the legislation, most of them linked to amendments introduced at the last minute.

He indicated that lawmakers would address the errors during the second consideration before proceeding with the legislative process.

“We have identified a few mistakes, most of the last-minute amendments, and therefore the next meeting will come back for a second consideration, and we’ll pass it,” he said.

The Speaker maintained that the bill would become law during his tenure, underscoring his commitment to seeing the process through.

“When we are no longer there, you can do what you want to do. But so far as we continue to exist, that law will be the law of the land. You can do whatever you want after I’m gone,” he added.

Bagbin Praises Samuel Nartey George

The Speaker also commended the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, for his contribution to parliamentary deliberations on the bill.

Mr Bagbin said the minister’s role in the debate had made Ghana proud.

The proposed legislation has attracted significant public attention and debate, with Parliament’s planned second consideration expected to address the errors identified in the version previously approved.
