The Bank of Ghana is set to introduce stricter regulations to protect customers from opaque bank charges, unfair digital lending practices, and governance lapses in the banking sector.
Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama announced that the Central Bank will enforce transparency in pricing, interest charges, and foreign exchange dealings. Commercial banks will be required to clearly disclose fees and charges.
The Central Bank will also tighten controls on interest charges across digital platforms and enhance transparency in FX pricing. A 10% cap on non-performing loan ratios will be implemented by 2026. Additionally, commercial banks will be required to publish details of “blacklisted” borrowers with a history of default in their annual accounts.
Implementation will be phased, with some regulations taking effect in July and August 2025, and others in 2026. The Bank of Ghana aims to strengthen regulatory oversight and protect customers from arbitrary fees and charges.
