President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the recent violence in Bawku, expressing confidence that the peace process led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will bring lasting stability to the area. The violence, which occurred on April 10, resulted in deaths, injuries, and the destruction of property, including the private residence of MP Mahama Ayariga.
Speaking at the Ghana Military Academy’s Graduation Parade on April 11, President Mahama emphasized that the Ghana Armed Forces is committed to maintaining peace and security nationwide, with Bawku being a major concern.
“The Ghana Armed Forces is engaged in several threats to maintain peace and security in our nation. One major flash point is the Bawku area. Only two days ago, a situation that took place in the market triggered an unfortunate loss of life and criminal vandalism of property. I wish to emphasize that nobody gains from this conflict and insecurities,” he said.
Mahama expressed optimism in the Otumfuo mediation process, which brings together key stakeholders to chart a path towards peace.
“We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which has all the stakeholders to ensure a roadmap towards peace. I am assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad,” he stated.
The President also assured that his administration will thoroughly investigate allegations of criminality, vowing to pursue justice without bias.
“We will take all allegations of crime seriously and trigger our security service investigation machinery to go after criminals, no matter who they are. But let me state emphatically also that we do not have the resources and time to engage in any game of smoke and mirrors,” he added.
