The Akwatia MP, Hon. Bernard Bediako, has condemned the Minority Leader, Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin, for what he called insulting comments aimed at a Circuit Court judge.
His remarks come after the Minority Leader responded to proceedings involving the Sunyani East NPP Communication Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando, who was remanded for two weeks by an Accra Circuit Court.
On Eyewitness News on Tuesday, April 14, Mr Afenyo-Markin challenged the presiding judge’s actions, calling the ruling improper and questioning judicial impartiality.
“That judge, the Circuit Court judge, shame on him. He has brought a big shame onto himself and the judiciary,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, April 18, Mr Bediako described the Minority Leader’s statements as unsuitable.
“With the greatest of respect, it’s a shame. I have so much respect and regard for the Minority Leader, but the way he went about this matter is very shameful,” he said.
Mr Bediako backed the judge’s actions, maintaining there was nothing wrong with the decision.
“There’s nothing wrong with what the judge did,” he added. He also supported the arrest of Abubakar Yakubu, noting that comparable steps were taken under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Abubakar Yakubu was detained on Monday, April 13, 2026, as part of probes into alleged offensive conduct, false publication, and spreading statements likely to cause fear and panic.
While formal charges have not yet been disclosed, sources suggest the arrest may relate to alleged threats made toward a judge at the Adentan Circuit Court, an issue that has sparked concern in legal and governance circles.
