Ghana national under-17 football team have failed to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup after suffering an 8-7 penalty shoot-out defeat to Uganda national under-17 football team following a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Ghana made a bright start to the contest and took the lead in the ninth minute through promising youngster Eric Gyamfi. The forward finished clinically through the legs of goalkeeper Lukyamuzi after being left unmarked at the back post.
Uganda responded by switching to a back-three system, a tactical adjustment that quickly changed the momentum of the game.
Midfielder Owen Mukise soon tested Ghana goalkeeper John Annan with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, forcing a sharp save.
Moments later, Uganda captain Mukise scored directly from the resulting corner kick to level the score with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Uganda pushed for another goal, but Ghana managed to hold firm until halftime.
Uganda nearly took the lead shortly after the restart when midfielder John Owino struck the crossbar with a powerful effort.
However, against the run of play, Ghana restored their advantage through Abdul Latif, who converted from close range after capitalising on a loose ball inside the area.
The move was initiated by Eric Gyamfi, whose cross from the left flank was cleverly dummied by Clement Agyei, allowing Latif to finish.
As the game approached full-time, Uganda appealed for a penalty following a handball incident inside Ghana’s box. After reviewing the situation, the referee awarded the spot kick.
Replays showed Ghana right-back Nicholas Asumang handling Mukise’s cross inside the area. Ibanda Arafat calmly converted the penalty, sending goalkeeper John Annan the wrong way to make it 2-2.
Despite 10 minutes of added time, neither side managed to find a winning goal, sending the match into a penalty shoot-out.
Just before the end of regulation time, Ghana coach Prosper Ogum introduced goalkeeper Michael Armah in place of John Annan and brought on Mark Mensah for Nicholas Asumang, seemingly in preparation for penalties.
However, Uganda held their nerve in the shoot-out to secure an 8-7 victory and book qualification to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
The achievement marks only the second time Uganda have qualified for the tournament, having first reached the competition last year.
